This cute guy isn’t a turtle, he is a tortoise! So what is the difference? Tortoises have thicker shells than turtles. Some turtles can live in water, but tortoises do better on land. A tortoise shell is shaped like a dome, while turtle shells are more flat.
Generally, baby tortoises are very similar to those of adults. Baby tortoises are reptiles and can not regulate their own temperatures. While adults can withstand much higher temperatures, young tortoises are vulnerable to temperature changes. They need to be able to move to the shade if they get too hot.
Tortoise babies also need access to water. While it is true that they get water from many of the foods they eat, a baby tortoise will do better if it can drink some fresh water. But remember, tortoises don’t like to swim!
You can often see tortoises enjoying the sunshine. They are typically lazy creatures, though they can travel to find more food. Different species have their own unique dietary requirements. They all require a variety of food so they can get a balance of nutrients. Unlike turtles who sometimes eat meat, tortoises are strict vegetarians. It’s only plants for them!
Despite tortoises being tough and hardy animals, they are subject to stress. They are very long-living creatures, some live longer than humans! Some tortoises can be kept as pets, but remember to always treat these animals with respect.
Tortoise Care – Caring for Tortoises
Tortoises have been gracing our wonderful planet for over 200 million years. If you are interested in keeping one of these beautiful animals as a pet, you certainly would not be the only one! Tortoises can make great pets as long as you have the time to care for them properly and ensure you have a habitat set up for your tortoise to love.
The bigger tank you can get for your tortoise the better. Keep in mind they will grow to be very big over time and will need a lot of space to live comfortably. The smallest recommended size for a tortoise tank is 40 gallons, but a 55-75 gallon tank is really ideal. Ensure that you keep a screen top on it instead of a plastic one to allow for ventilation into the tank.
Unlike you and I, tortoises require the temperature to be consistent, as that is what regulates their body temperature. Typically their habitat should be between 70-80 degrees F with a basking area of 85-100 degrees F. They need to bask daily to promote good shell health! A tortoise’s shell is like our skin. It needs to stay just as healthy as your pet’s insides!
Tortoises should eat a very plant based diet. This means that a salad would be their favorite food! Hold the dressing though as that isn’t very good for them. Feed them lettuce, carrots, cucumbers and other veggies frequently. If you want to give your tortoise a special treat, try a strawberry or apple!
